The 13th season of Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) was scheduled to start in late March but was postponed due to the global health crisis. BCCI is planning to host the IPL 2020 in September to November window, in case the T20 World Cup in Australia is not held this year.
With the reports coming in that both Asia Cup 2020 and ICC T20 World Cup 2020 likely to be postponed, the road for IPL 2020 almost looks clear other than the venue for hosting the tournament. With the increase in coronavirus case in India, BCCI is looking to host the season outside India.
After UAE and Sri Lanka, New Zealand has also offered to host the IPL. BCCI have to make choices between these countries among all the stakeholders.
“Staging the event in India has to be the first choice but in case it is not safe to have it, then we will look at the overseas options. After UAE and Sri Lanka, New Zealand has also offered to host the IPL,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
“We will sit down with all stakeholders and take a call. The safety of the players is paramount. There will be no compromise on that,” the official said.
