Ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Super League (ISL 2024-25), Spanish centre-back Carlos Delgado has signed a contract extension at Odisha FC in a move that sees him commit his future at the club until 2026.
The Spaniard played a key role in Odisha FC’s first major silverware, the Super Cup triumph in 2023. Furthermore, under the guidance of Sergio Lobera, Delgado played a pivotal role in the backline, helping his team reach the ISL semi-finals for the first time.
The defender was a mainstay at the club when he joined in 2019 under Josep Gombau. After a brief spell away from India, Calros returned to the Bhubaneswar-based ISL outfit once more under Josep. They enjoyed a successful spell of games and also helped the club qualify for its first-ever ISL playoffs.
Delgado has made 45 ISL appearances for Odisha FC so far, keeping 10 clean sheets. With his leadership qualities and rock-solid attitude in the defensive third, he has been an integral part of Lobera’s style of play. Delgado averages 46 passes per game, has won 68 duels, completed 89 recoveries, made 33 interceptions, and also scored a goal.
Speaking of the new contract, Odisha FC head coach Sergio Lobera said, “Carlos is the soul of this team, he is an example of commitment and professionalism. He helps us on and off the pitch. For me as a coach, it is a privilege to have a player like him.”
Carlos expressed his delight at his new contract and said, “I am so happy that I get to stay at Odisha. This is my family now and that is what matters to me the most. Everyone in and around the club is pulling towards the same direction. I’ll see everyone real soon at the Kalinga.”
