Ahead of the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024), Royal Challengers Bangalore have officially changed its name to Royal Challengers Bengaluru during the RCB UNBOX event at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
“The City we love, the Heritage we embrace, and this is the time for our A new chapter. Presenting to you, Royal Challengers Bengaluru. You team, you RCB,” said in a post on X.
RCB have officially replaced the ‘Bangalore’ in their team name with the city’s official name Bengaluru. The franchise will enter IPL 2024 with the new name of their city.
The team called Royal Challengers Bangalore since the inception of the tournament in 2008, will now be called Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
The franchise had teased a name change at the start of the month with video clips featuring big names from the Kannada cine industry through their official social media channels.
RCB are not the first IPL team to change their team name. Kings XI Punjab changed to Punjab Kings two years ago while Delhi Daredevils changed to Delhi Capitals following JSW Group’s investment in the franchise.
Even earlier, the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant team dropped an ‘s’ from their name ahead of their second and final season in the league.
Royal Challengers Bangalore start their IPL 2024 campaign on March 22, 2024 in the opening match of the season against Chennai Super Kings at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
